Hi! I’m heading to MO for the summer to teach music and play, but I need to find out about insurance cover. What do I need? Where’s the best place to find out about it? How much will I have to fork out? I’m really clueless here - medical insurance isn’t something I have to worry about here. Any help would be much appreciated!
TIA,
Deirdre
Edited to say that the ‘poll’ option should be policed - you have NO idea how tempted I was to add one. The possibility of having to deal with the diagnosi… uh, I mean response… was just too much for me though!
Assuming it’s somewhere in the States, I think any medical insurance could be covered under one travel insurance plan. Most Travel agents will also try to add innsurance without telling you, so be careful you don’t end up paying for the same thing twice.
[quote=“Martin Milner”]forgive my insularity, but where is MO?
Martin- MO is the postal abbreviation for Missouri. Now, one might think that it would more likely be for Montana, but no, that state gets MT as an abbreviation.
Your travel agent will offer travel insurance, but check carefully, it might only cover repatriation costs rather than medical costs incurred in the USA. Are you in the VHI? As far as I know they cover costs incurred while on holidays, but you might hit ceilings on treatment costs.
Sorry, Martin - should have been clearer! Thanks for the website.
Roger, I’m not in VHI or BUPA here, so that option’s gone too.
I’m going to be in the States for probably 3 months, and I’m going to be working, so I was (indeed, still am) assuming that it would probably make more sense to get coverage from a US company. I’m going to be playing a lot, and I may need to get physiotherapy or something like that while I’m there. As far as I can tell, most travel insurance policies reimburse money that you have had to pay for treatment, rather than paying off the bat, and I’m not sure how that would work out, given costs in the US.
Has anyone been in this situation before? Perhaps more to the point, what would a physiotherapy session cost on average in MO?
Help!
Deirdre
Here in the US, it is not uncommon for a wait for insurance to kick in from your employer. Temporary employees may not even be offered health insurance. Normal waits are from 30 to 90 days, the entire time you will be here.
Some policies may not cover the therapy you suggest you may need.
In fact, lots of folks are not covered in the US by any policy, and many musicians fall in that group.
Catastrophic insurance can be had for reasonable money. But with higher deductables thay you may be used to in Europe.
Your best bet may be to check with your employer before embarking.
