Well, yeah, it’s a buyer’s market if you price it like that-at $400 off of retail! That’s like getting the rings and tuning slide for free.

Too bad I have enough flutes keeping me busy at the moment, but at your price, I probably won’t have to feel the pain for long. Someone will get a nice Burns!

Tell me again why it’s a Rudall, even though the body is one piece.
.
Is it the bore? ( I’ve read through the archive, but it seems there’s always an exception.)

Hey Roj,

YES, It’s the bore.

Casey Burns, Pat Olwell, ARHPA and I’m sure others makers all produce a Rudall copy flute with one long body piece (like a Pratten).

It simplifies the making of the flute. But I like it because it is simpler and stronger. It is also claimed to improve tone and response. Plus you can optimally place the G# (if it is employed).

However, you give up the luxury of adjusting the sections differently for each hand.

Thanks, S.

That sure is pretty. Why don’t more people have boxwood flutes?

Hey Diane,

Check out this small holed boxwood Rudall & Rose by Tom Aebi. The wood was supplied by the owner, it was a piece of boxwood root.

All the Best!

Boxwood is less dense than blackwood, tenons are sometimes
more inclined to
swell with moisture and sometimes boxwood flutes
bend like bananas as humidity changes,
though that doesn’t affect their sound.

I think boxwood is yummy looking and sounding.
Happily I’ve never had difficulties with a
boxwood flute.

Casey does really nice stuff with boxwood.

Hmm. My mopani flute’s tenons swell with moisture, too.

Man that is one beautiful flute that burl-wood one!

Mine too. I carry some waxed dental floss with the flute. Sometimes I need to wrap the tenon for a good seal, and sometimes it’s tight enough that I remove it. I’m curious to see if there’s less swelling/shrinkage as the wood ages. Lovely stuff, that mopane, but I suspect it may be more variable than blackwood.

I’ve tried wrapping floss or more thread when it seems loose. Then it swells and I can’t get it apart!

Swelling is a matter of degree, of course. Not just
boxwood. Blackwood flutes can swell too.

I think boxwood is less dense than
mopane. That is about as dense as blackwood,
I think.

Boxwood makes for light flutes.
The wood has a lovely sound, different from
other woods, IMO. It was used a good deal
during the 19th century.

Also I believe boxwood is the least likely to cause
allergic responses.

Casey has very clean lovely boxwood, and his
design compliments it both visually and
acoustically.

Hey CrookedTune & Diane,

Liberally coat the ends of your tennons with oil (repeatedly). This will help to seal up their pores and keep the moisture out.

Another alternative (if your tennon/socket doesn’t close very tightly) is to clean the ends of the tennons with rubbing alcohol and then apply a light film of super-glue on the end. You want to paint the end-grains, not the inside nor outside of the tennon. WARNING - DO NOT REASSEMBLE FLUTE TILL GLUE IS COMPLETELY DRY!

All the Best!
