Twelve acres, even if it were completely covered with Arundo donax (which it’s not in this case), is a drop in the bucket. There are wide swaths of land covered with this plant throughout the coastal portions of Southern California, and eradicating it is very difficult and costly.
One friend, who is a piper himself, spent years trying to get rid of a stand of Arundo donax on his property. I had another neighbor that resorted, after trying herbicides and digging up every rhizome he could find, to capping part of his yard with concrete in an effort to eradicate a small plot. It’s a hardy plant, to put it mildly. ![]()
There’s little to no likelihood of it being eliminated from this part of the world in our lifetimes. ![]()
The State agency that I work for, the California Regional Water Quality Control Board, if probably involved in this project, at least on an approval basis. Malibu has many water quality issues.
