So, I got painted

Last week I met an artist named Robert Gantt Steele from Northern California who was in town for the Plein Air Art Show. 20 artists were invited to paint local scenes, etc.
When he found out that I played the uilleann pipes he was fascinated and asked if he could paint me.
I naturally agreed and he came to my house and painted me in one and a half hours in oil on linen board.
I was very pleased with his rendering.
The town held an auction to sell the paintings and give 40% of the proceeds to Polio research.
Since I am currently unemployed (lost my job a month ago), I couldn’t afford the painting, but to my great surprise, my daughter and her husband secretly bid on the painting and purchased for me!
Anyway, there are a couple of photos on my website at: http://katzwerk.com/infopage.htm
Cheers! Richard

Very nice! Did you play while he painted?

Yes, I did play for him most of the time he painted except for a few short breaks. I wanted him to get a real feel for his subject.
It was a very pleasant experience.

Coolness Mr. Katz!

My mother had Polio as a child and it forced her to wear a full leg brace for the rest of her life… but, it never really got in the way of her remaining very active. Now you have something to pass down to all the Katz’s to come.

That’s a lovely painting, and between the artist and your outfit, it’s got a great ‘timeless’ quality. It could be from any time.

Heya Richard, I just thought I’d share this with you. This is a painting our own Glands (Lewis Blevins) did of me a couple of years back. It was painted from an old photo, back when I still played the octopus…

Very nice painting.

PD.

Hey Joe, that looks like a nice D-Throw in the painting. You still play 'em once and a while ?

It all depends on how you look at it , I would say you are now a full time piper.

RORY

I guess you are correct. I am a full time professional piper just trying to make ends meet. I only need five piping gigs a week to make it.

Oh, how I would love to just play music full time. I definitely have more time to practice now.

Send all inquiries my way

Cheers! Richard
