Snake eats Gator, stomach ruptures

The guy was shooting pictures of a water moccasin when a gator came up and tried to eat it.

I normally go to a site called Snopes ( http://www.snopes.com/ ) when I see stories like this one. 99.999999999999999999999999% of the time they are false. I suggest everyone bookmark this site and use it regularly so as to false stories and the like from continually being circulated.

Well, guess what I found when I went there today and searched on this topic?

Amazing. I am fairly certain the gator did NOT claw his way out. Snakes are pretty good at not trying to swallow animals until they are certain they are really DEAD. I have had dozens of snakes over the last several years and have yet to see one try to swallow prey alive.

Of course there are ALWAYS exceptions to the term NEVER. :roll: Life is just that way.

Well, seeing that alligators can hold their breath for 20+ minutes (or ~40 minutes, depending on who you ask), it could have still been alive when it entered the snake.

Besides, I don’t know of any creature that naturally holds its breath for any length of time while it is struggling for its life. If anything the heart and breathing rate would increase. At least until the coils got tight enough that the lungs could not expand any longer…

… and each time the gator exhales, the coils get tighter. There’s really no way a snake could eat a 6 foot gator alive.
