Silkstone D+

I just got my silkstone D+ whistle. I am a new player. I also have a Clarke D whistle. The D+ whistle sounds like more of the air is making the whistle sound whereas the Clarke has more air going through making a hissing sound. I have to really back off the air pressure on the D+ or it goes to the 2nd octave (when I say back off, I mean barley breath.) My Clarke goes to D just fine (more dependable?) but I have to back off of it too, but not as much. Since I’m a new player these problems may be my fault. Any advice?

Hi James,

Don’t worry, it’s not your fault. Different whistles have differing air requirements, and the player has to adapt. Some are more challenging to play than others, however as you gain experience with different whistles, you will find it easier to adapt.
I don’t own a Silkstone unfortunately. They are, I think, well regarded in the whistle community, and it is highly unlikely that your whistle is at fault either. Just play until you get used to it’s response.
Enjoy your whistling!

Best, Adrian

P.S.

Forgot to mention:

The Clarke will sound “hissy” as you put it. They are noted for their soft and airy tone…so don’t worry!

The Clarke is not tweeked?

The Clark and Silkstone just play differently. If you’ve been playing the Clarke exclusively, then there will be a significant adjustment period. Once you’ve adjusted to the Silkstone, you may appreciate the fact that it takes so much less breath. It allows you to play longer phrases.
