Side-Effects of sticky tape?

I’ve just placed some sello-tape over one of the holes on my chanter to flatten the pitch of one of the notes, it worked a treat and is now well in tune. I’m a little concerned however, that there may be some long term side effects to the wood when I take the tape off. Has anyone used sello-tape and taken it off after a few years?, i’ve seen what sello-tape can do to books! Cheers.

Then change the tape every few months… when you clean and oil the wood, polish the metal, inspect the keys, adjust a reed, etc.

i’ve put tape to help out my C# every so often when the humidity/reed does odd things. In fact when its not in use, I stick it on the reed cap just waiting. I have a Martin Preshaw 1/2 set without observing any ill affects other than hitting a bad note or two.

Any tape slides around and leaves sticky stuff. Ugh! :boggle:

Give me a rush or poster putty any day.

Tape leaves its adhesive behind when it gets old. Real old. It’s not hard to remove. Ask anyone who has had to tune a highland pipe. I’ve never seen any damge to chanter woods(even the cheap Pakistani ones) from sticky tape. Just make sure any adhesive residue doesn’t let dirt clog up the finger holes.

You might want to try gaff tape (like what theater geeks use). Not the easiest stuff to get a hold of, but it holds better and longer than regular sello- or electrical tape and doesn’t leave so much sticky residue.

Find a friend who works in a hospital (or maybe a pharmacy carries it) and get some 1/4 inch surgical tape, the one with the threads running through it. It’s easy to handle and holds in place well.

Instead of tape (of any kind) have you considered just swabbing the inside, upper surface of the offending hole with Amberoid glue? It will effectively flatten the hole, and can be added a bit at a time, and is easily removed with care and a bit of cold steel.

i heard jerry o’sullivan say in a class at north hero that no well made chanter by contemporary makers will be damaged by tape. you can clean it with alcohol, just one example.

3M Transpore is the tape I would reccomend. It can usualy be found in the bandage/medical section of a grocery store/pharmacy.

Read this thread for alternative ideas to taping.

I didn’t think anyone used Ambroid glue anymore. The last time I used it was making a die cut Mr. Mulligan ( biwing- 30’s era). I would be very careful when you are scraping the hardened orange stuff out of the finger hole. Surgical tape/cellophane/semi opaque binding tape would be safer.

When the humidity does odd things, the tape goes on and off, so quick replacement is an issue of mine.

Nothing smells as good as Ambroid Glue. And yes, it’s still found in the hobby shop right next to the balsa aircraft.

(I’d just scrape beeswax on the top of the hole though, easier to move around and shape, comes off easier.)
