I’ve just a acquired a flute with the above name inscribed on it with the serial number 4590. It has a very 60’s case. I would be extremely grateful if anyone could tell me more about it. I can’t seem to find anything much on Google search. Are they good or Chinese rubbish? I also got a piccolo of the same description with serial no. 6485.
When they arrived they were in a pretty dire state probably having been in a cupboard for more than 30 years! So I’ve cleaned them up and they look pretty good, just need a little service now. Not being a flautist myself I can’t give them a good testing so I’ll take them to my local music shop wwhen I get time. All bar the G key, the flute seems to respond well.
When he was twelve or thirteen, he got his first modern-style flute, a Selmer Gold Seal. ‘I tell you,’ he says, ‘it was the worst piece of junk that anybody ever sold me—if they had sold me a car in the same condition, it wouldn’t have even started, and if it did start it would have fallen to bits and rolled down the road! That’s how bad this flute was, and it wasn’t helped by my tinkering with it.’
And from the same author’s bio of Patricia Lynden:
One day she saw a Selmer Gold Seal metal flute which she took on approval. With great excitement she took it to Mr. Claudis, who said to her, ‘Oh, dear, no, this must go. This is just a peashooter with keys!’
