I was in Budapest recently and I visited a sort of music school that specialized in traditional arts. They were playing these cool flutes that I believe they were like…humming into or something to get a sort of buzzing sound that projected a bit more, as they were fairly quiet on their own. Does anyone know about these?

It sounds like you’re talking about the furulya. It’s a Hungarian overtone (not Overton!) endblown flute, originating with the shepherds on the puszta (central plain).

If you return, there is a whistle and flute maker named Ban Gyorgi who sets up a little stand down on the water front. If you hunt through his stock, you can get a nice wood whistle and flute for very little money.
Some of these type of flutes have a small membrane that is vibrated by the air in the bore.
