Sacred Pipe Tunes

Hey all,

I am in a Presbyterian Church in Virginia and we are looking at having a piper in for Reformation Sunday, October 3rd. My question for you is this, what would be some tunes we should look at that would be appropriate for that day? We are already going to do Amazing Grace so I am looking at some others that have some sacred text to them though not for folks to sing.

Thanks,

Mark

Are you talking about having an Uilleann piper or highland piper for your church service? I’ve heard Amazing Grace on the Highland pipes and it sounds wonderful, …

Seems like “A Mighty Fortress is Our God” would be appropriate… but y’all are probably already singing that as a Congregational Hymn.

The Church’s One Foundation

Now Thank We All Our God

Holy, Holy, Holy could work well with a tie-in to God of Wonders (if you want something more contemporary).

I dunno… just a few thoughts, YMMV.

I was thinking more in line with tunes that are tied to the reformation in Scotland. Highland Cathedral does have some references to God but I would like to find something that may be a bit more rooted in historic Presbyterianism.

Hmmm, methinks you might do better over in the music forum at the BobDunsire website:

This forum deals specifically with Highland Bagpipe tunes.

One Presbyterian hymn that works well on highland pipes is “Guide Me Oh Thou Great Jehova”. Faith of Our Fathers would sound good also.

There’s a melody which the Irish version of the Lord’s Prayer is sung to. I’ve been playing it for a while. I believe it’s a Sean O’Riada composition but I can’t confirm it. I’ll try record it and post it to Clips and Snips.

Presbyterianism and the GHB are not a happy mix.

I participated at a Presbyterian service a few months back which featured Uilleann Pipes, Violin, Church Organ and GHB. It was well prepared and well performed.

Unfortunately it didn’t inspire me to convert from Reformed Contemporary Heathenism.
