I’m considering buying a Reyburn low D,preferable used(I’m on quite low budget).
I have a dixon low d flute whistle combo, but I’m not really satisfied with it.I like the tone, but it’s very quiet, with weak bell notes. Not a very precisely made instrument.
I was browsing this site for Reyburn owner’s experiences, but couldn’t find too much,so thought to ask around in a new thread.
I have relatively small hands(even compared to other women),but I’m not too scared of practicing, and stretching. So if a low whistle is not too impossible to play,I’ll manage it someday I guess.I heard the Reyburn low Ds are not too easy to play.
I love the look of the old design with the maple head…I’m not sure they are still available somewhere.
Their sound is just exactly what I like, very tribal(not sure this is what I want to say:-)it defientely has some old, authentic charm about it that I have in mind about irish music(judging from the soundclips, which I know is never the same as playing it)
I’m very interested in your opinion about the old and new low Ds.
Backpressure?
Playebality?
Responsiveness!!!
Anything you’d like to share with me
I’d like a low D for slow airs mostly
Edit:I’m also interested in the Burke low D pro viper. I don’t know which one you find a better instrument.
Just to let you know that the new Delrin head low D has just been released and there are only two of em out in the world. Doc Jones has one and hes planning on doing a youtube review shortly so check with him.
I have since sold the Burke in favor of the Reyburn and an Overton. The Burke is a fine instrument and a VERY playable whistle. I just prefer a different voice.
If you’re wanting a open, kind of haunting complexity in the voice - the Reyburn will do that for you. It’s almost like there’s a tiny reverb unit tucked into an unknown corner of the whistle. Don’t know if the new Delrin heads have the same character.
I inadvertantly sold it and shipped it to some nice lady several months ago.
After writhing on the floor briefly and (eventually) talking myself out of commiting hari kari, I came to grips with my loss (figured someone would trade one in eventually). The biggest problem has been my wife who still hasn’t forgiven me.
In the mean time, Master Ronaldo (sensing a a great sadness in “The Force” no doubt) made and sent me one of his new models. It’s quite lovely. I’ll be doing a Youtube vid as soon as I get over the terrific head cold I’m currently battling.
Does anybody out there have a sound clip of the old version with the maple head?
What are the drawbacks of this low whistle? Are there any?
What extra quality the wide bore one has?
