Now and then I come across phrases suggesting that so-and-so plays with a West Clare style to take a particular example. There must a whole body of knowledge out there, of which I’m totally ignorant, of different ways of playing the whistle, different styles, relating to different regions of Ireland, and who plays in that style. I’m steadily working my way through Mary Bergin’s Book 2 but with no idea of what her style is, where it comes from or how it compares with other styles. Can anyone tell me if there’s some resource I can read that will enlighten me further as to these different regional styles, what they sound like and who plays in them?
While it is focussed on the flute, the following article might provide a start.

I’m sure some of the Irish players will chime in also.
Best wishes.

Mike, take a look at You Tube ‘County Clare Music’ parts 1 and 2, great informative viewing.
