Help,
Over the last two weeks I have been experiencing reed shutdown syndrome in the middle of playing a tune…this is with two spearate reeds on two different chanters..Its weird…I started playing the pipes last spring so I first passed it off to the dry cold front here in NJ…but I have humified and so has the weather..openig the reeds doesnt even help…it feels like pressure is building up to a point where it is choking the reeds.. with and without the drones…My fingering is still not great but I never experienced this situation until recent and I know my fingering has not gotten worse…I really sense the pressure choke when coming down ffrom the low octave B A G …what is going on here?? anybody??
thanks
my pipes . I must say I am puzzelled . I strapped in to my own pipes and had a go at the mid range of the chanter in the 1st octave . That seems to me to be the area where the least amount of bag pressure is applied to get the notes . You are saying , I think , that the reed (s) close up there , from undue pressure , .
The best advice I can give is to say that you may be giving the bag too much pressure in the other notes , and need to look at that . Liam O ’ Flynn once said that it is worthwhile to practice around a tecnique , by finding a tune that has it in it . . Somehow , you are stuck . The other option is to get two new chanters , and two new reeds , or wait fore the weather to clear .
Tom . p.s . What o flynn was really saying was to find a tune that has the fingering you want to practice , and go at it that way , through the tune , and not by rote , repitition , over and over . To apply that to your situation , play those notes that are problematic , and see if it changes things . A quote from the tao , everything changes , the changes are allways the same , learn them and adapt to it easily that way . My 3 cents , who said pipes were easy ? lol.

your problem is that the air is too dry for your current reed setup.
The truth is allways the simple answer . I am refering to glans remark .
Tok .

Little acorns into great oaks grow.
It’s the glands that do it.
