reedmaking

I’d like to start making my own reeds (particularly drone reeds - mine are much too loud for my chanter in my estimation and I’ve heard that elder reeds are softer). i’m wondering if anyone knows where I can get a set of reedmaking tools (i figure that should be better than just home depot for generic gouges and stuff) and elder or cane.

I haven’t done this before and any help that could be offered would be appreciated.

thanx

Greetings Antaine,

Check Seth Gallagher website:

Scroll down for reedmaking kit, and link to other tools for sale. Plus reed-making info in general. Seems like a good place to start.

You can also try the sites from Evertjan 't Hart :

and follow the links on this pages :

For the material, you can buy everything needed at www.pipers.ie

Since no one mentioned it, Tim Britton also sells reedmaking kits. Though he does have his own reed design, so if you absolutely want a ‘traditional’ reed his kit may not be exactly what you want. That said, the quality of his reedmaking kit is good, and I do like his reed style for certain chanters.

I knew npu had them up once upon a time but I had trouble finding them on the site when I was actually looking.

tim britton rebuilt my full set (minus the chanter) so i suppose he’d be a logical choice for the tools.

iontach maith!

That was your Egan set he “rebuilt” for you Antaine right?

Sorry folks… I think the green season soaked in a little too much

I just uploaded a couple of notes about my own endeavours in elder drone reed making.
