Ok, this started out as a double post, but I thought I’d make something constructive out of it…
I MIGHT have asked this before, but couldn’t find it today on search:
I NEED a new D chanter reed. The one I have is no good. I’ve been putting up with it not knowing any better until I played my new B chanter. My concert chanter’s going more and more out of tune, and I really don’t think it’s the chanter itself. I think the reed’s just done. Can anyone recommend anyone on the East Coast (preferably) that I could send it to?
Do I recall you playing a DS chanter? Didn’t you post a sound clip of The Lakes of Pontchatrain?" If so, I thought the reed sounded good last year. Reeds can last almost a lifetime you know, if they are treated right.
Koehler is good, up in Vermont. He’ll need your chanter, like most. Don’t know if Gallagher does custom reeds. Childress is out there too. Isn’t David Boisvert near you?
I do have a Stephenson chanter, but that clip wasn’t me. I thought that reed sounded really good, too - way smoother in the second octave than I ever got mine, no matter what bridle adjustment.
In the past, Seth Gallagher would do custom reedwork. He reeded my Rogge narrow D chanter with great aplomb; I don’t think the Rogge reed liked humidity. And I live in a swamp.
Who knows, though; Seth may be enjoying such fame and fortune right now he might not have time for a simple reed order.
Ben Koehler doesn’t do custom reeds. At least this is what he told me on the phone a few weeks back. He only reeds Quinns sticks now. Don’t know about Gallagher. Have you tried your hand at making your own??
