Recently I was in the bedroom changing clothes. Dinner was almost ready. I began hearing this really nice music. Was it my daughter, playing her flute? She’s usually to shy to play openly. No…that’s not a flute…sounds brighter, and has a rounder kind of sound. I walked in the dining room to find my daughter improvising on my O’Brien wooden whistle.
“I was piping you in for dinner,” she said.
I don’t have any sessions nearby, and no real opportunity to hear others play the whistle except through a CD. And the sound was beautiful–it squeezes my heart!
And I was reminded of why I like whistles so much. Not just because it’s easy to play (though that doesn’t hurt). It’s the bright sound, which no other instrument can claim.
Why do you love whistling?
That’s a very sweet story, thanks! I love all musical instruments. I think your own sig line says it nicely.
Thanks Riverman. I can relate. I now dread telling my son to stop playing his whistle up in his room late in the evening. I can’t believe how he has just taken to the whistle. He kinda likes the no rules, play it your own way type of music he can do on the whistle. I like the whistle because I can play my daughter to sleep with Brahm’s lullaby and then manage to impress Marilyn Monroe with Danny Boy
. Mostly I like my whistle because I have an O’Brien rover and a Sweetheart Pro D, both of which fit in my pocket and I find myself during those odd times of day when I’m just waiting for something to be able to fill my time with a touch of something kind of like music.
that is a great story, and a good question. i love whistle so much, because it is part of my history, and wonderful music. it is the only instrument in which i sound good on. the whistle has changed my life in many great ways. it has been a tough stuggle to get this far, and an even tougher one for the near future in learning harder songs. i hope our daughter gets into whistle/irish flute.
That is the cutest thing I’ve heard in a while.
…can just pick it up and play a bunch of different types of tunes that do my heart well…can take it anywhere easily…keeps me young (in some ways).
