Recording one's whistling

I know that several C&Fers record tunes and post them to sites, such as Snips & Clips. What recording software do you use and/or recommend? I’m looking for something simple, easy to use, and free.

Hey Thornton!

How’s things down your way? I use a program called “Goldwave” which you can download at:

http://www.goldwave.com

It’s shareware, which means they ask you to pay a registration fee if you like the program. It’s pretty straightforward, and has some useful tools.

My biggest gripe, is that you can only undo once. Unlike say a photo editing program where you may be able to undo several or all of your changes made to the original.

Anyway, it works pretty well, and it’s free…at least to start with.

Glad for the opportunity to encourage more submissions to Snip and Clips (or Clips and Snips, as it’s known to the cognizenti)(that can’t possibly be spelled right)

If your computer is not terribly old, your sound card probably has software already that will allow you to record.

I use Goldwave, which can be downloaded as a fully functioning trial version for free. It costs about $40 to buy. Definitely worth it. It has lots of editing features, like, if you slurp wetly on a breath in, you can tone the volume down for that moment. (Or you can amplify it if you’re perverse.) It also lets you save your sound file in many formats and many compressions of mp3.

It’s a fun process to record yourself, and it’s a great learning experience, as things you think sound cool when you’re playing, don’t always when you hear them recorded. Get started. We all want to hear you play!

I use Cakewalk express. It’s available at http://www.cakewalk.com for ~$29. It’s user friendly and has a lot of fun features. I usually use MusicMatch (which is free) to convert the files.

Hey Tony,
I don’t know about cognizenti, but spelled is supposed to be spelt.

(Actually it is both!!)

Try n-Track Studio. It’s been good to me once I got through the setup preferences, etc. The free trial version is excellent and the registered version unlocks some of the features for $39 USD. Very intuitive and easy to learn. The trial version is good for 40 days; plenty of time to decide if you like it, and if you do, registering is easy and fast (I was given codes to unlock the program only hours after registering). I have not compared it to CoolEdit or others, but it’s free to try and I loved it.

Happy whistling!

Thanks, everyone!

Well, I too use GoldWave, and I really enjoy it for nice and easy yet flexible tunage!

If you want to get down and dirty though… and have a little dough you can let go… GET SOUND FORGE!!! I love it, and I use it to record albums with for many people.

My office is a sort of acoustic room, and works great for small 5 or less piece bands, and with a few microphones set up, I can’t believe there’s a better program out there with all the plug-ins you can get.

Works great for simple uses too, so like I said… I use GoldWave alot, but if you want really fine control of the file you’re making, go for Sound Forge.

Take care,

John
