recorder friendly comments only please

But no one will answer my stoopid question, I see…

So here’s another one :

Mike, did you ever have in stock or demonstration a Maartin Helder (Tenor or Alto) from Mollenhauer ? Comments appreciated…

Please excuse me to insist :

is Zen-on and Aulos same thing or totally different, er, whistles ?

Two different companies, both of which make plastic recorders. Aulos also makes plastic Baroque flutes.

I haven’t played any Aulos instruments, but I have played a Zen-On Alto (I think a Bressan copy, if I remember right) which had a tight voicing, projective sound, and lovely tone.

Thanks, Texarkana James!

Hello Zubivka,
The Maarten Helder recorders from Mollenhauer
are amazing instruments. They are for professional
level recorder players and quite expensive and I’ve
only had one Tenor in stock a couple of years ago.
We stock on a regular basis the Modern Alto
Recorders from Mollenhauer designed by Tarazov &
Paetzold which also have 3rd octave
capabilities and are comparatively inexpensive.
If you are interested I suggest you contact
Mollenhauer directly http://www.mollenhauer.com
as I believe they are more than willing to
educate potential end customers about these
instruments.

The Antique Sound Workshop sells tweaked versions of the Yamaha 300 Series plastic recorders. The Yamaha 300 Series is generally considered one of the very best of the plastic recorders. I have a soprano with the imitation “Palisander” woodgrain. The physical appearance is much better than most other plastic recorders. Their website is at > http://www.aswltd.com >

At the risk of starting a fight, I would not recommend Antique Sound Works. When I bought my Yamaha 300 they claimed that the wood grain paint makes it sound better. They also claim to re voice all the recorders that pass through their hands. They of course charge extra for this “service” and it’s not an option. When I told my music teacher about this she just shook her head. I wouldn’t buy from them again. For more information on this, try the yahoo recorder forums. There were some pretty ferocious wars over this subject.

I would also recommend the Zen On recorder if you buy an alto. I had lots of clogging problems with the Yamaha and have almost none with the Zen On. The Aulos I tried had a strange wavering F that was tricky to control. The Zen On was by far the easiest for me personally to play.

I hope this helps.

Yes, Tom, thank you.

I think what is going to happen is that I am going to play my future recorders a lot more than I originally thought. Now I have a list of people to talk recorder with. Someone is sending me some instruments for a test play. In the meantime I am practicing the fingering on my Yamaha sopranino and listening to lots of Telleman (sp?).

Thanks Mike. I’ll skip the “Modern” (Paetzold) : 1) it’s an alto. 2) it looks like a recorder. But I’d really like to hear the Maartin Helder…

TomR, it’s an alto Aulos you have with a “funny” F ?
Mine is a tenor, and it has a ghost F : undecided between =F and F#.
Maybe they should change the lamps of their 1952 calibrator

Tom,
How do I find the yahoo recorder forums? Believe me, I tried…
