And I love the chemistry and the amount of knowledge I’m seeing here, it’s just phenomenal…
And glad that i registered and became part of this beautiful family.
I’m new to the low whistle (6 months) , never new to playing music…at all (20 years) .
So,
After having almost every low D that I’ve known
Still can’t find that very quiet (really Very Quiet) Low D whistle!!
Which you can practice and play all night without disturbing anyone!
Is there a factory made whistle or a custom made Low D whistle maker who can do that.. ??
I have a Shearwater Bb and it is one of the softest and quietest whistles I’ve ever played. I would imagine their low D is similar. It’s like playing through velvet–good for home but not for performance.
Which ones do/did you own? My most quiet low Ds are: Tony Dixon ABS one-piece model. The TWZ “Lucy Adams” is even more quiet but due to the very large bore it has some intonation issues (or I’m just too dumb to play it properly). The Chieftain V5 is also fairly quiet.

From the above collection, my quietest is the Kerry Pro! Which myself asked Mr. Phil specifically a very quiet instrument.
Still I’m looking for a quieter whistle !!
And to me, every 2 or more pieces whistles sounds quieter than any one piece whistle! I guess those slides dampening the sound a bit.

Ive found that folding a piece of paper and putting it down the windway till it just protrudes at the labium mutes the whistle quite a bit without affecting pitch! I used a plastic sweet wrapper, that way its not affected by moisture.
Honestly everytime I wanna buy a Howard! Someone will say it sounds like a recorder with a nasaly tone!!
And i heard that after Mr. David took over,
He changed the fipple design which it sounds different than before… Is that true?
And I believe the gold plated Howard will sound the quietest?
Thanks for the list of whistles. I like the Howard (I like the sound and it is also fairly responsive for a low D, so quick tunes are no problem) but it behaves a bit odd (got one of the older ones) – when playing very softly you basically need less air for the 2nd octava than the 1st and it will be rather quiet. When playing “normally” with more breath pressure for the 2nd octave it will be anything but quiet.

My Howard is a black one, its just a powder coating on the brass - about the fipple design, I have no idea, as I am new to whistles, & have only just purchased my first low D, but I did buy it mainly on how it sounded.
Yep most of the ones I’ve seen are the black ones…
And as I said from Ms. Tamsin videos, it’s a very quiet whistle
I guess I’ll go for the gold plated (as gold plated brasswind instruments always sounded so sweet and fairly quiet-and it might be the same with whistles)
I’ll buy a Howard and will still look for that special super quiet instrument
