Is switching back and forth tween keyed
and unkeyed flutes a problem?
On the unkeyed flute do you
keep reaching for keys that aren’t there?
As I’m just a trad player, no. I just don’t play tunes that require the accidentals in that case. I think your situation is a bit different, Jim, as I get the impression that you play a much more varied repertory.
It’s easy to do. It’s funny though, I find I actually miss finger the G# and C keys the most when I immediately switch from keyed to keyless. I never realized how much I used them until they were missing. But it’s a very easy adjustment.
The only key I would absolutely miss is the Eb, and that’s because it’s where I rest my little finger. I’ve borrowed a friend’s keyless, and it leaves me struggling with where to put that finger, and how to stabilize when playing a C#.
As for the other keys, I do miss the F-nat when playing my one-key Sweetheart. Most often though, I find myself wishing for a longer, keyed foot for those songs at session that go below the low D.
I miss the Fnat for a couple of tunes (The Cook In The Kitchen and The Yellow Tinker instantly spring to mind) but you can work around it. I only miss the Cnat untill my brain clicks into keyless mode - then the cross fingered Cnat comes easily (I still use the cross-fingered Cnat on the keyed flute, only using the key for BCB type runs). I just avoid G sharp tunes when playing keyless and I almost never use B flat and E flat anyway. (I started trying to learn Pady Fahy’s, the version on Eamonn Cotter’s CD, and it has a B-flat. I have now stopped trying to learn it )

I missed the G sharp and C nat keys - and it drove me nuts, as I kept reaching for keys that weren’t there, and having to make an instant adjustment. Very disconcerting… I love my keys, I know I shouldn’t, but I do - LOL!
On the other hand, I never reach for keys when I’m playing the whistle - cause there aren’t any, and never have been. It must be something to do with muscular memory…

thanks. I’m gettin a six keyed copley in a few weeks
and I’m wondering what will happen to my keyless
flutes. Must wait and see. I suppose one can adapt
to just about anything, and do plan to keep
playing the keyless flutes, too. Best

flutes<
You will pack them up, and ship them across the state to me.
Not only will this give you time to focus solely on your keyed Copley, but I will personally be helping liberate you by decreasing your attachment to things/illusions.
Again - you will ship them to me across the state.
Feel free to thank me when you come out of the hypnotic state and realize you are more at peace with the world…I’ll bite the bullet for you and accept that which will only hurt me.
Guess who’s very jealous? Congratulations on your impending arrival!
Eric
I will ship my keyless flutes to Jayhawk…
