Chiff! I love it! But I have 5 different whistles - 2 of which I play daily, but haven’t noticed any chiff when I play. Do you think it’s because I’m a beginner…does a whistle’s chiff show up after more experience, or does a whistle have it no matter what?
There are varying accepted definitions of chiff. If you are referring to breathiness, then yes, usually a whistle has it or doesn’t, although a whistle can sound more breathy if the tongue or cheeks are in the way of the air stream. If you are referring to the crispness of the start of a note, well, that can be something that a whistle has or doesn’t, but mostly will develop with playing technique.
So, what definition of chiff are you talking about?
