PVC Irish Flutes

After experimenting with various materials and various ways of improving the octave tuning on cylindrical flute for a number, I have reached a point where I am satisfied with the kind of flute that I am able to produce, i.e. one that both sounds good and looks pleasing to the eye.

I would appreciate your feedback.

Your flutes look (and sound) very nice, but I have a suggestion for your website. The photos page links go to very small pictures, you should have the images link to a larger version.

Also, the tunes you play on your YouTube channel are very simple. I’d suggest you send your flute to some expert players so they can demonstrate it on more complex or faster tunes. Seeing Jem Hammond play Doug Tipple’s flutes on YouTube convinced me that it was a proper flute and not just a budget instrument, and this was a big factor in my choosing to buy one.

Or have a flute tour, like so many whistle makers have done.

Thank you so much for the advice. You can have a look at the new photo’s.

Could you direct me to some flute tours so that I can see what is the norm out there?

Here’s a good tour thread from the whistle forum:

Great new photos on your site, and I noticed you have a model with a C foot which is quite unusual for a PVC flute.

Looks more like a ‘long D’ foot to me (well, you try covering those vent holes with B4!). And I’d be surprised if it didn’t sound lower than C with the vents covered because it looks like a very long D foot!

The lowest note is a D with the first six holes covered. The vent holes make the D and E sound more in tune with the rest and also in the higher octaves.

I have made a video playing some parts of Handel’s Messiah and Bach’s St. John Passion on a new PVC flute. Enjoy!
