It’s a 30-key Connor C/G, provided by Chris Algar. I will be left with just under $100 in my bank account when that payment goes through, so it’s time to clear out the instruments I don’t need as much.
No way to tell by looking at the photo, you’ll have to contact him and reference the serial number - I’m guessing Pat keeps records indicating what model each serial numbered instrument was.
It’s funny; the main photo that came up when I went to the site made it look like one of those rare Olwell “holeless” models. Seriously, though, thanks for such extensive photography!
Well, the metrologist in me has gotten the best of me. We may be able to tell from the pic, from the ratio of the E (or F# depending on whether you use maker or player lingo, anyway it’s the largest hole and the one with the greatest difference from the Nicholson to Pratten models) hole to the length of the hand joint. On my Olwell Nicholson it’s about 3.3%. From a pic I get 3.4-3.5%. I get about 3.5-3.6% from the pic that Avery linked to. So we have about a 10% relative uncertainty in the method. From an old pic of my Hammy I get 4.0%.
The pic on ebay is not only smaller, it’s also taken at a skew angle. After rotating the picture, I get about 4.0%. Based again on pics with an Olwell right next to a Hammy, it looks as though the length of the Hammy hand section is within about 1% of the length of the Olwell hand section. I’d lean toward saying this is a Pratten model, but I’m not gonna argue with anyone.
Will you eventually put the Connor comcertina on ebay, Im looking for a good concertina, the one i play now has seen better days. Let me know when its going on.
I’ll be putting in an order for a 39-key Suttner within the next few months. I’ll only sell the Connor when I receive that, so it’ll be a while.
As always, check The Button Box frequently and email Chris Algar at Barleycorn with what you’re looking for on occasion. There’s also a 32-key Jeffries on eBay now. A 39-button Jeffries just sold for over $5300, and it looked someone found it at the bottom of the Sears Tower stairwell. Who knows how much this one will go for.
It’s a long weekend here in New England: Today is “Patriot’s Day”, we even have an extra day to file our taxes in this part of the country - 4-18 is the deadline for us.
Today was a big day – the marathon, the Red Sox playing at 11. Josh Beckett is 3-0 and has given up exactly one earned run in each of his three starts. I knew he’d be a great acquisition.
