Practice Chanter Reeds?

I tend to be wordy, so I’m providing two versions of this post…

Short version:
Where do you get your reeds for your practice chanters (online), and is there a particular brand you recommend?

Long version:
So, I’ve just begun to learn the GHB. I bought my practice chanter online and the reed in it is rather crap for a beginner. My teacher had no issues with it, but about 70% of the time it either makes a high squeal or low growl for me.

In the little bit of research I’ve done on it, I understand that some reeds have issues such as this, and that they can be perhaps fixed with a bit of sanding and/or cutting. I’ll likely try this to see about making it easier on me. Regardless, I know that I’ll need a new reed at some point in the future, and I’d like your input on a good online source for them. I’d also like input as to what brand you prefer to play.

Thanks!

First of all, make sure it’s not wet. Squealing and growling sounds like a wet reed. Take your chanter apart and let the reed air dry, until the hemp feels mostly dry.

If your instructor didn’t have any problems I’d be inclined to stick to the reed. Blowing the chanter takes some getting used to at first. Did the reed squeal or growl when your instructor played?

Does it have an elastic? Sometimes that can bring it under control. Use an orthodontal elastic like for braces.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a pc reed that didn’t take a little time and maybe a tweak. I’ve played many makes of reeds. In the past I’ve liked Henderson, Warnock and Ross. I’m currently playing a Walsh and have it set where it’s just right. Ask your instructor where he/she gets reeds and what kind of reed to get.

I agree. It is more likely a breath control problem. You have to work at getting the air pressure in to the sweet spot and blowing tone as they say. Spend your time playing and not fiddling with the reed. If you still have trouble after a few weeks ask your instructor about it.
