Playing in different keys on a Whistle?

Hello all

I’m fairly new to the Whistle, and having trouble understanding playing in different keys on 1 Whistle. If i’m correct, you can play in F and D on a D whistle, yes?

What i’m asking is,how do I know if i’m playing in F or D?
Sorry if i’m being a complete numpty.

Thanks

A D whistle will play in D or G. You will play in D without cross fingering or half holing the C# note. You will play in G when you do cross finger or half hole the C# making the C# a Cn

Here is a link to a chart that may help you. http://www.thewhistleshop.com/misc/fingering.htm

Easy keys are: D, G, A, A minor, E minor, B minor. F is possible but tricky due to half-holing. Easier would be to play a C whistle using G fingering. This would give you F.

So I was wrong in the first place with the keys. The chart will be usefull ,Thanks for the link.

Thanks for the reply

I had this page bookmarked. Should provide you with some stuff to chew on.
Deciphering Whistle Keys

The tin whistle plays in different modes, so try a board search about whistle modes rather than keys.

Any knowledge is valuable for its own sake and knowing how modes relate to keys & both to a whistle has some real world applications, but this is far from essential info at your stage of learning, if you’re finding he prospect daunting at the moment..
