Plastic Laminate on Waltons

Hiz All,

Anyone was successful in ridding of the plastic laminate on Walton whistles???

Give me a shout pls! Am thinking of getting steel wool to assist in this and then brassoing my Mellow D. It looks horrible now with the black/brown spots…

I just peeled it off of mine, and thereafter kept it polished with Brasso.

The coating on my Walton’s was pretty tenacious; started dislodging at the tone holes through use so I just started nervously picking at it between tunes at the bus stop. I eventually got all of it.

I HATE tarnish so I tried this about a week ago and have so far been happy with the results:

After Brasso’ing the whistle, apply Rain-X windshield wax to the whistle. Allow to dry and then buff off. The wax will rub off around the finger holes pretty quickly, but will keep the rest of the whistle sparkly for…well, at least a week. They still look really good, so I’m guessing two weeks between applications would work…depending on how often you used the whistle.

If anybody tries this let me know how it works out for you.

Good luck,
Eric

We used an oily product called “goo gone” with success. I think we’ll try the rain-x too. That sounds like it would work.

I have a Walton’s Mellow D and the coating on it looks more like lacquer than plastic. If so, lacquer thinner should take it off pretty easily.

I removed the finish on my old Soodlum with 0000 steel wool. I was going to keep it polished with Nevr-Dull, but I kind of like the look of the patina it’s getting.
