Grannymouse,
I wish I was there to hear you. After reading your message, I played “O Holy Night” on my whistle. Aside from one note needing cross-fingering, it seems like the song was made for the whistle. It plays beautifully and really shows what emotion a whistle can evoke.
The whistle has a similar effect on people as a solo violin. When played mornfully or passionately, it can make people cry. When played fast and joyful, it inspires people to get out in the sawdust and dance.
I love it. Even better, I love playing it.

My 8 year old son, Josef, played his first solo this morning during our Children’s Christmas program at church. He played a verse from one of the songs that was supposed to be whistled by the choir. They couldn’t produce much volume so the director asked him to play it on his tin whistle instead. He did beautifully! Many there had never heard or seen a tin whistle before and complimented him on how well he played the “flute thingy”!Anyway, I was privileged to accompany him on the piano. We considered it a Christmas present to us to be able to play together. I’m sure that he’ll be asked to play again. I’m also sure that his next solo will be on the Laughing Whistle he’ll open on Christmas morning! (Thanks Jessie!)
Merry Christmas to all,
MegWhat a thrill to play together. I do think they should rename the whistle that “flute thingy” as people ask me that all the time. Gm
Thanks Cinead…appreciate your thoughts… and some day…I hope to be able to play it on the violin (I can play it…but not well
) Gm
