Speaking of regulator playing in past posts, does anyone have any idea why Paddy Maloney never plays his regulators? I’ve heard him, once or twice, on the older Chieftain recordings but never live and never on the newer recordings.
Perhaps it’s just his preference? It’s kind of odd, considering Leo Rowsome was one of his teachers.

P.S. Also, it’d be wonderful to hear a solo piping recording of Maloney. I do have the Drones and the Chanters volumes and really enjoy Maloney’s pipering.
Yes, it is a treat whenever Paddy plays the pipes, but recently (or for some time now) he seems to prefer the whistle. Anyone have any idea why he doesn’t play as often on the pipes? Perhaps he has a bum arm or something?
I have heard rumors to the effect that the members of the band don’t really get along with each other (could indeed be just rumors) and my thought is that Paddy playing pipes would bring too much emphasis on Paddy… but I don’t know… any thoughts here?
A Moloney solo piping recording would be excellent, of course!

They got along fine when they were in Denver in January - Matt and Kevin were out together for pints after the show.
Given the amount of time they spend together on the road and in the studio, I think it’s a testament to their friendships, given that most of them have been playing as “The Chieftains” for 40 years (although Paddy’s the only one that long, but the others are on 25-30 years).
As for regs, have you ever heard a piper playing them during a session?
I think they’re fine for solo work, but with other musicians, not so fine.

Yeah, actually. I’ve heard pipers at a session in Greenfield, MA play them, in addition to other pipers in New England. I’m not very advanced, but on tunes I know well, I also play the regulators.
