Overton is better but more expensive and sometimes there might be a wait to get one.

The whistles are actually a lot alike. But, I think - and I believe a lot of people will agree with me - that Overtons have a slightly more complex tone (more overtones, chiff, whathaveyou…), which I for one prefers to the tone of the Chieftans.

This is an easy one. The better whistle is the one you like the best. Does that make sence? Realy you need to try them both out if possible. Otherwise you will most likely end up with both. Or maybe not.

Seriously though the nice thing about buying an Overton is you can contact Colin and tell him what your looking for in the whistle. If he has a bunch on hand he will play them for you over the phone (this is worth every dollar the call will cost) I think he sometimes builds them in batches so it’s likely he’ll have a few when your order is up. He will even ingrave your name next to his on the inside of the whistle if you ask. This is a very cool thing he did for me, and I didn’t even ask.

There is also the “Standard” or “Big hole” option. I have a big hole D and absolutely love the thing. It is extremely warm and mellow but has a good amount of pop to it. I’ll soon be ordering his standard as well.

About the cost, the Overton realy isn’t to much more.

About the Chiefton D, can’t say much other then your more likely to find one to try out then you are the Overton. If you order one, it’s going to be off the self. I think most places will do the over the phone thing for you though. I hear Thom at the whistle shop, is realy good about this.

You make the call, either way the LoW D is an amazing instrument.
