Overton Low D tunable vs. non-tunable

Well, time to accomplish the dream and order my Overton Low D whistle. One question before I get it. Any comments or things I should know about tunable low whistles? Problems? (I’ve never played on a tunable tin whistle before.) I heard something once that if you separate the pieces completely, they might never fit back together correctly. I have this paranoia that the parts will eventually loosen and the whistle’ll start sliding out of tune when I’m playing it. Or would I be better off going with a non-tunable? I plan on playing with other instrumentalists.

Thanks everyone!

Joey

With whistles such as overtons and chieftains you don’t have to worry about them never fitting back together or breaking because they’re made of some pretty thick alumminum. Alumminum of this thickness isn’t prone to breaking, expanding, or shrinking. So I wouldn’t worry about it one bit. And I wouldn’t worry about a overton being out of tune, because they are always built right and in tune when properly warmed up. Either way the tunable or nontunable overton is a good, safe, reliable purchase. Put the paranoia away and get the overton.

I hope this puts you at ease about your purchase.

And make sure you warm it up.

Thanks Jack. Great advice! Putting the paranoia away now. Anyone have any other comments? This is my whistle for life here, I want to be confident I’m making the right decision! (I KNOW everyone understands where I’m coming from…)

Thanks again, Jack. Awesome.

I have a tunable Overton low d, and have no problem with it slipping, breaking, etc. If anything, it is too difficult to tune. But it doesn’t matter anyway, because the pitch is so excellent that it doesn’t really need it. But if you plan to play with other instruments, I would highly recommend the tunable because you may need to adjust to other people that can’t tune their instruments. It is better to be safe than not to be able to play your overton with someone because of pitch variations. Don’t worry, and I would get the tunable! Sorry for repeating myself. And congratulations on getting it (whenever you do)!

Thanks, Karina! That’s exactly what I was hoping someone would say. Give me a reason to go all out.

Ha!
