Just curious, aside from Irish traditional music, what other repertoires/styles of music have you explored on the simple-system flute? And are there any particular players who inspire you?
Well, Scottish (of course, as a Scot!) and other trad/folk cultures + Classical (mostly Mozart and Gluck, for which my four-keyed Copley’s more fun but arguably not that much more ‘appropriate’ than a Boehm) and Romantic for a start…
But really anything that takes my fancy and fits!

I have occasional drifts playing such like:
I don’t play an awful lot of ITM these days. I play a lot of Playford tunes, O’Carolan, and baroque music, mostly Telemann.
My favorite player is Chris Norman; I prefer his stuff with the Baltimore Consort to most of his solo stuff (except The Man with the Wooden Flute). Their album of Playford is really wonderful.
Some like it hot.
Breton! Jean-Michel Veillon!
There are many other styles of music I’d like to expand into a tad bit in the future, as well. However, for now Irish, Scottish, and Breton tunes are my main thing.
Yup…much Breton. I also enjoy playing some Centre France style Mazurkas, waltzes and Scottisches on the flute.

+1 for Jean Michel Veillon, totally inspiring and a really nice fellow as well.
I hardly play any ITM at all, but lots of English, French and Scandinavian tunes sit very well on the flute. Ben Paley’s book ‘Swedish fiddle Music’ is a joy, especially if you can persuade a friend to join you as there are harmony parts for all the tunes.
I’ve also found that a lot of ragtime tunes work nicely on the wooden flute - might need a transposition to get it into a reasonable home key, but after that it’s fun stuff and really gets me out of the traditional music idiom.

Newfoundland tunes, like Gerry Strong plays. Though I admittedly play them a bit more often on whistle, I’m still trying to get my flute playing up to snuff.
Edited to add: I forget there are videos online. Daniel Payne plays some Emile Benoit reels. Gerry Strong plays some polka-ish tunes. Danny Mills has posted loads of Newfoundland tunes, mostly played on flute.

Agreed and agreed! I like Sylvain Barou’s album very much! Some Asturian tunes on there, too. On the track “Alborada”, for instance, where he plays a tune that I’ve heard on a Llan de Cubel album, followed by one of his own compositions.
Llan de Cubel is another good band to check out if you want to hear some music from other traditions also being played on simple-system flute. I didn’t mention it, because I thought the thread was wanting to know what we ourselves play, rather than music in general on simple system flute. In that case, there are plenty more I can add here, after I get some sleep.
Liked the Nuala Kennedy stuff, by the way! Never heard her before! I’ll have to check out more of her stuff this week. Thanks for sharing!
