I need some advice on what could be a life changing decision.
I’ve suspected for some time now that my girlfriend has been having an affair. The usual signs. Phone rings, I answer, someone hangs up. She started going out ‘with the girls’ a lot recently although when I ask which girls it is always “Just some friends from work, you don’t know them”. I always look out for her taxi coming home but she always walks down the drive although I can hear a car setting off. As if she has got out of the car round the corner. Why? Is it not a taxi? I once picked her mobile up just to see what time it was and she went beserk and screamed that I should never touch her phone again and why was I checking up on her.
Anyway, I have never approached the subject with my g/f. I think deep down I just didn’t want to know the truth but last night she went out again and I decided to check on her. I decided I was going to go to the pub across the street which would give me a view of the whole street so I could see which car she gets out of. It was whilst unpacking my pipes and assembling them that I noticed a chip had come off one of the drone mounts.
Should I take it to my pipemaker or should I buy some stuff from the shop and try to repair it myself?
I’m glad you reached out to the community. Relationships are a difficult thing, especially when it evolves someone you love and care for. But remember, you are not alone, these kind of things have happened before and others have survived them. I feel your despair, and in a situation like this it’s easy to blame one self, with stupid questions like “how could this happened”, “what did I do wrong” …
But you will have to snap yourself out of this destructive thinking Rick, it won’t get you any where. You have to realize a few important things. First, the drone mount is a sensitive zone that is easily damaged and should therefore be handled with care, use gentle force and insert the drones slowly during assembly (in some cases a lubricate can be handy). It is also important that you’ll gradually work your way up to the drone mount, the bag, bellows and chanter will also need an equivalent amount of your attention. Rushing through the foreplay and head for the drone mount is usually not a good choice. Second, chips can come off, it’s not the end of the world as long as it doesn’t affect the sound. Remember looks and figure isn’t everything, it’s personality that matters. Last, a good relationship must be based on respect and mutual trust and now when you have mistreated her, off course you’ll have to take her to a decent pipemaker to get fixed.
If so, you got what you paid for. Chances are she needs to be re-bored. I wouldn’t worry too much about chips, as that is a minor problem compared to the tuning of the beast.

I had a nightmare that was as bad as your story – I dreamt that my wife left me for a button accordian player. It’s ok though, turns out it was a nightmare only and she left me for an Uilleann Piper.
