Okay, I’ll try to make this as concise as possible, and as clear as I can!
Ever since going online, my computer has been connected to the phone jack in our bedroom - a distance of about 40 to 45 feet away from where it is in my computer/music room. There is no phone jack in my computer/music room ( which shall from now on be referred to as “c/m r”) During all the time I’ve had this set up I’ve had no problem with my internet connection speed, which had usually been 50 - 53.2K on a 56K modem. Last week, the phone I was using started going haywire and died. Before it died, I was only connecting around 37.2 - 40K. At the same time, our house phone went on the fritz, too (my source of internet connection). While waiting for the phone company to show up for repairs, I ran my line out my c/m r window, directly to the phone poll in our backyard - a distance of about 30 feet. During that time, I was contnuously connecting at 52 or 53.2K. Well, the phone company showed up (seems we had a short in a jack in our family room), I ran my line back to its’ original location in the bedroom, and now I’m only connecting at 36 - 40K. I contacted my ISP, and they said the problem could be due to the distance my computer is from the phone jack it’s plugged into.
My questions are : is that true? And, if so, is there any solution to this problem besides paying the phone compamy over $100 to have a jack put in my c/m r? If I run my line straight to the phone pole, our house phone won’t work!??!
Sorry, this was longer than I was hoping it would be. Thanks in advance for any solutions, tips, etc.
The distance probably is the problem. I live way out in the sticks, and I can only get about 28.8, even though I have a 56 K modem. A computer geek told me that it was because of the distance from my house to phone center or something like that. The lines can only carry so much, so fast.
Holy smoke Larry if my computer ran at that speed I would have a heart attack. My conection speed out here in the sticks is 3.6ks sometimes on a real good day maybe 4. That is with a 56k v92 modem. Thats why my posts read so slowly
tinlaw, if the computer geek says distance presents a problem then I guess my ISP was right. And, from what you and Tom have written, I suppose I should be thankful for the connection speeds I’m getting.
Odd, isn’t it, that someone who never even thought of owning a computer untill 5 or so years ago is concerned with such mundane things as connection speeds.
Everything is relative, Larry. I have a high speed cable hookup at home, and I get impatient because I’m used to the T2 line I have in the office.
And by the way, I cancelled the HBO package from my cable company when I got their internet connection, and the bill is about the same. Your neighborhood is probably set up for cable internet. Check it out.
Now that’s an idea that never crossed my mind, Jim. And we have Comcast’s premium package, with Starz, Showtime HBO, etc. - definitely no reason to have all those movie channels, especially since they all eventually play the same movies, not to mention the fact that they play the same movies over and over and over!
My wife and I each have our own computer, so if we went for the cable deal would we have an extra charge to cover the two? Thanks.
You wouldn’t have an extra charge for another computer. Tell them up front though. They need to know so they give you the right modem.
Trust me, once you go cable, you’ll never want to go back to dial up.
And once you have a high speed connection, you’ll be on the computer so much, you’ll never have time for movies anyways. So cancel the movie channels and get a cable modem.
I have comcast cable hookup and it is fast. I download multi meg upgrades in 2-3 minutes. I watch full screen video and music connects immediately. I don’t think you will be disappointed. By the way think about how nice it would be to download 110 tunes in 2 minutes.

Now Im crying the blues. It took me 2 days just to download the 32 geezer flute collection. Needless to say I dont download anything unless I just can`t live with out it. I must listen to the geezers at least once a day and sometimes more. Oh well I guess I can live without cable or decent phone service. I realy like having Molly in my back yard.
aol(ain’t on line) sent me a 56K external modem and it made all the difference in the world. they were about to loose me as a customer and they sent me the modem “Free” and 2 months more free service.
i connect at about 53. something now.
