OT... did any body notice that today is April Fools Day?

Hello Folks,

I often wondered the history behind this day.

Today is the first day of spring break. My children are home. And I am wondering which one of them will realize what day it is.

Hmmmm… should I break it to them gently or should I just let it slide?

Happy whistling,

Laura

You can’t pass this one up! This day was made for fun! I think the April fool’s joke I’ll play on my wife is “I’ll never buy another whistle - APRIL FOOLS!”

I vow that I will never play my whistle again! I will sell them all and devote all of my time teaching nose flute!

It’s also Dyngus Day. If you live in Western New York (or other areas where there are large Polish populations, you know Dyngus Day is vastly more significant than April Fools Day!

If you think about it, “Fools” is not an inapt description of growm adults who buy dozens of simple musical instruments, many in the same limited number of keys, which can only be played one at a time.

So how do you celebrate it?

Not true! The other night my boyfriend and I played two recorders and two whistles all at the same time!

BTW, Ebay has played an april fools joke - they reversed all their images on the top of their main page.

Beth,

I am having troubles visualizing that.
Did you tape the top half of the whistles and play them like a tabor pipe?
Or perhaps the top of one and then the bottom of another?

Laura

Or did I just got hit by my first of the day April Fools joke?

No joke, though I’m sure we did look foolish. Just playing the top halves of each instrument, one in each hand and two in each mouth. Can’t play much but I believe we did “this land is your land” and some other beginner recorder song I knew. (He’s never played before.)

Chuck, shame on you! You know we are not April Fools! …

Ours is a year-round avocation.

Laura,
Do you mean how do I personally celebrate Dyngus Day or how is it celebrated by the the people around me?
Personally, I “celebrate” it by making jokes about it, and using the term “Dyngus Day” a lot on the day after Easter. What is really supposed to happen is that girls who have taken an interest in a particular young man (or young men in general) use pussywillows as switches and pummel the object(s) of their affection with them, upon which he pours water all over them (squirt guns are the modern version). Although I’m part-Polish and have lived in a heavily Polish area virtually all my life (until two years ago), I have never actually done this, had it done to me, or seen it done by anyone. Just talked about. The way people in Western New York really celebrate Dyngus Day is by having a big dance with a couple polka bands and copious amounts of alcohol. If this all sounds ridiculous to some of you, rest assured this is not an April Fools’ gag. It just so happens that Easter Monday falls on April 1 this year . . .

After reading that website… I was just wondering how you celebrated it in NY.

Yeah, Easter came a bit early this year.

My children never did get me for April Fools day.

But, boy, did a friend of mine and I get it. We went to a celtic concert in March. After the concert we spoke to the flute/whistle player. He mentioned giving whistle lessons the first and third Mondays of the month.

We drove 45 minutes getting there. It was canceled. We spoke to a women there who was giving Irish step dance lessons. She said oh, sometimes it’s the first and third of the month and sometimes it’s the second and forth of the month… Geeze, I guess we should of gotten his phone number!

I was given this site address by a friend.
