Old Oak

Well, this was really interesting…

My parents visited us from Washington State this week. As usual, mom came with bundles of stuff from the basement…mostly my stuff that’s been in storage or things she’s been saving for me. This time, she happened to mention that she’d brought one of my “little flutes.” I was intrigued, as I was pretty sure I already had all my “little flutes” with me (to the best of my memory, I’d only had the Generation Eb and a Yamaha soprano recorder when I lived with my parents). Sure enough…when mom got here, she pulled out an Oak whistle! It’s definitely an older instrument…the logo is quite different from the current Oak logo, there are a few tooth marks on the mouth piece (yes, I used to have a bit of a nibbling habit!), and it came in a clear plastic carrying case with a snap closure. I have absolutely no memory of this whistle whatsoever. Mom says my sister remembers my aunt and uncle giving it to me, but I’m just drawing a blank. It’s got to be at least 20 years old, as I haven’t lived at home for at least that long…in fact, I’d guess it’s older, as I was in high school when I was most involved in music.

The cool thing is, I like it much, much better than my “modern” Oak. The sound is cleaner and mellower. It’s neat to have this “found” whistle…I sure wish I could remember where I got it, however!

Those tend to appear (with the same type of little clear-ish logo and bag) on eBay quite often.

I love how moms get the terminology wrong.

A few months ago I found in the attic at my parents’ house a Gen Bb (with the mold mark on the mouth piece) and a Soodlum “Mello” D, both at least 13 years old. I was actually looking for them and quite happy to have them back. Both are better than their recently-acquired counterparts. Either whistles have to ripe, or the quality has gone down recently.

I recently bought a 12 year old feadog mark 1 off ebay just in interest. Now it is my number one whistle. I hate to say, but now i play it more than my sindt and my sindt was a long time favorite.
