Okay folks, now I'm excited!

Hello everybody.
I just got a phone call from the fiddler of my band. We have quite a gig coming up.
Next August we’ll be performing in a local music festival in Hungary! Four days and it will cost us nothing.
Should I get a better whistle for it or can I use my old Sweetone?

Arto

Congatulations on your gig!If you like your sweetone stick with it but you can never have too many whistles.A Susato would be my back-up choice and you may even prefer its tone and intonation to your sweetone. Mike

If you are traveling, and like the sound of your Sweetone, stick with it-- maybe carry several with you, since things tend to get lost on the road.

I also say stick with the Sweettone, but have a back up or three. You’re familiar with your current instrument’s requirements, so you won’t be under pressure to figure out a new whistle’s nuances while you’re actually performing.

BTW, congrats on the gig! Sounds like a great four days!

Congratulations!

Go with what you’re familiar with. A new whistle that is not comfortable is a mistake. If you do buy a new whistle, put in a lot of practice time on it before you go, to learn its “personality”.

A gig that won’t cost you any thing?
How much do you guys usually pay to play?

Nick

I think they are making the same amount in the gig as it would cost them for a 4 day trip to Hungary, so they break even…

Hey there, Arto! Is my brother going with you? If so, tell him I said congratulations.

Buy a new whistle. Buy a new whistle.

NicksterNM, they don’t pay us anything, but we don’t have to pay flights or anything like that.
LittleMy, your brother will be there with us.
Anyway, I really really like my Sweetone. It sounds beautiful and it don’t require much air. I could always buy several more sweetones, but it really isn’t so easy (and cheap) here in Finland. Only whistles available here are Generations, Waltons and Clarke originals. So if I buy a new whistle I could buy something little more expensive.
A whistle that requires little air and has a very pure, bright tone. What would that be?

Arto,
Do you know your sweetone can made tunable?Just dip the head in near boiling water for a few seconds to soften the glue, remove the fipple and wipe off any excess glue.Filing the ridge down underneath the top of the body will help to reduce friction and a few wraps of plumbers teflon tape should give you smooth tuning. You can also improve intonaton by slightly enlarging the 5th hole(2nd hole from end) with an oval shaped jewelers file and it gives you a better F# and C nat.My tweaked sweetone is one of my favourite whistles. Mike

You might want to think about an Oak.
