I won’t be getting my set of pipes for Christmas =[ because my dad says that I’m rushing things, and I guess I am. I have a low whistle and it’s the closest thing to a chanter, so I’ll work on that more!
But… Comfort me! Make me feel happy that I won’t be getting a set of pipes this year!!!
Well, my brithday is in April so it’s not THAT bad, I’ll get it by the beginning of summer ish =P
Fiddlin, you didn’t really want to play those stinky squeaky old noisemakers anyway…you’re much better off sticking with whatever you’re playing now…yeah…in fact, you’re a better human being for waiting to get Uilleann Pipes…the rest of the world looks up to you for guidance in this matter…hmmmm, don’t think that worked.
Fiddlin’, when the time is right, you will get your hands on a decent practice set. If you really want it, it will happen. But Patrick D’Arcy’s right…get on a waiting list now. After all, you’ll want to have enough life left in ya’ to play 'em once they finally do arrive.
Truth be known, I am fond of the recorder, especially when music intended for it is played on it. But I feel it is the wrong thing to use when you want to learn how to play the Uilleann Pipes. Brian suggested the tin whistle, and I agree wholeheartedly. The fingering for whistles and U-Pipes are very, very close to one another.
Ah, yes I know, I actually didn’t plan on PLAYING the recorder, just imitating the fingerings =P hmmm, well I do have a low whistle.. Well I have whistles, and a low whistle, preparation for UP!
There’s a thing called an ‘uilleann whistle’ which you can get from songsea or something like that. It’s a whistle with a long tube for you to blow in and it has the Uilleann pipe fingering so you can learn to play tunes UP-style. It’s about US$85 but if you pay a bit more there’s a silly drone attachment too.
I don’t know anymore about it or if it even works - how do you stop the notes if air is still passing through the fipple part? I was looking at buying one the other day as a substitute to keep my fingering in order while my rotator cuff injury heals. But then I figured, naah, I’ll just wait and play the tin whistle in the mean time. I’ve got better things to spend US$85 bucks on, like put it towards a new sound card.
It could be useful to start learning the fingering on while you await your real pipes though. Then again, put your US$85 towards your down payment on your real pipes. Why am I even writing this? 'Cause it’s hot, humid, and there’s nothing on tv (‘The Bill’ is too soap opera these days).
Oooooh, how cool now that I think of it. I’ll stick to my low whistle though, minus the sound and just from memorzing the fingerings, I think I’m catching on.
::Light bulb goes off::
Brilliant! I can finally “play” while I’m on the phone!
