Mine is the black “Pocket Sax.” I’ve only just started to work on getting a sound out of it (I’ve never played a reed instrument before), but am already impressed with the volume and tone. It’s a nice looking and substantial instrument too…nothing toy-like about it at all. It’s a little like someone shrunk a clarinet and substituted nicely beveled tone holes for the keys.
Congrats, Red!
I own one of these as well, though I must confess the novelty wore off rather quickly. I am a sax player, so the embouchure was comfortable (though a little wide for my taste), but I could never get used to the 4+4+thumb fingering, rather than the 3+3 I’m used as a flute player. And, you’ll note in the fingering chart that one of the chromatic tones is not built into the instrument – you have to ‘bend’ it with your embouchure to get the note. Sadly, that’s a design decision the maker just had to live with to claim a ‘chromatic’ instrument. (It’s the high f#. The fingering chart says “flatten with lip”: Fingering Chart )
I do agree with you about the big sound though. Every time I do pick it up, I end up playing “Auld Lang Syne”, a la Guy Lombardo, complete with really wide, sappy vibrato. Some day I’ll record it. It brings enough of a smile to my face when I play to make me unable to continue playing …
I got me a xaphoon a few years ago, and I really enjoyed it, but I never think about the fact that i play left-handed. Since the Xaphoon has offset holes, holding the thing was always uncomfortable for me, so I ended up selling it
I’m not sure if its the excess reverb or the cheesy synth background music on their sound samples, but it sounds more like a clarinet than a sax. Is it just me? If it really does sound like a sax I’d want to be able to play the solo from Us and Them.
I think it sounds more like a sax, but my ear isn’t experienced enough with this kind of instrument to tell for sure. Normally I’m not all that fond of the sound of a clarinet, and I like how the Xaphoon sounds…but then, it could be the music I usually hear on the clarinet that I don’t like rather than the instrument itself.
You’d want a Tenor Sax for that. The Xaphoon would be a couple
octaves too high. You could probably jam with Branford Marsalis,
though (or Kenny G, if you really must). Of course, you can find a
used Sax on ebay for under $100, so I never felt the need for a
Xaphoon.
I saw one for sale on Doc Jones’ website and showed it to my sax-playing buddy. He was quite taken with the idea. Who knows, maybe it’ll slowly pull him over to ITM.
What blew my mind is how something that small and inexpensive can make a noise eeriely similar to an insturment much larger and much much more expensive. Could it eventually overtake the sax section?
Someone (NorCalMusician, now IdaWhoa, I think) brought a Xaphoon to one of Tony’s parties a couple of years back, but said he hadn’t done much with it. So LimuHead picked it up, played a few experimental scales, and proceeded to give us some good-sounding jazz. And yes, to my ear, it does sound more like a sax than a clarinet.
I played sax back in junior high - I’m really tempted to get one. But not until my flute is more solid. About 2020 or so, say.
