Cormac McCarthy’s The Road
Anybody read that? Does it still give you nightmares. I can’t figure out what it made me feel. Hope? Hopelessness?
No, I haven’t read it. This feeling of hopelessness, of despair, even, would you liken it to an attack by Dementors? Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Worse because at least dementors would not remove from you the knowledge that something better still exists. There’s quite a difference between knowing that something has removed all joy from you and knowing that joy no longer exists at all in the world.
I have read it twice and it is the darkest thing that I have read ever! My imagination, my reasoning tried to fill in the blanks to make it more a story but there is no beginning and no ending..just the road.

The book I am anticipating is by Alan Weisman; A World Without Us. It is an interesting thesis, what would happen to our world in five years, in twenty years then on and on, if there were no humans at all. The Globe and Mail gave the book a two page spread this past weekend and full page book review.

The Road is easily the grimmest book I’ve ever read. McCarthy’s prose is spare and lean. And at times it feels quite gentle and tender. There are, I think, only 10 people in the book. Only one has a name.
The book asks lots of big questions. For me. it’s how does a person continue to hope when we’re on the edge of planetary extinction? Why try? How can one not try?
