Newbie November Homework Assignment

Go play in a stairwell. Tell us about it.

Extra Credit: Find & tell us about another acoustically interesting place to play.

showerstall works for me

Playing in the woods is really nice.

You two failed. Did mccurtis read my post, jump in the shower, play a song, and jump back to post a comment in 10 minutes? Did Lyn D do the woods thing in 30 minutes? Actually go do this in November and tell us in greater detail about your experience.

Make up exams will be considered.

I always bring a whistle to the laundromat. Great acoustics. I’ll do it again and report back the next time I take a batch of laundry. I also played in a large industrial hall that I was painting last year. It sounded like playing in a cathedral. No chance to go back there now, as it is full of machinery now.

(Am I a newbie…?)

can i not reply until Dec. 1?

If you want to lose a letter grade, you can. Do & submit the assignment in November. If you’re one of “those” newbies, you can do the assignment this afternoon, post your reply this evening or tomorrow, and spend the rest of November treating yourself for WHOA.

edit: MagicSailor, you can consider this a refresher course.

i don’t want to have points deducted for tardiness.

:astonished: I didn’t know we were being graded… I guess I didn’t read the assignment correctly.

Not sure I can get back up to the woods, but If I do, I will play my whistle and report back.

If you can, go play in a cave.

A few years ago, I was on a day-trip to a state park that featured a cave. The cave had a small creek running in it. Walking the cave was about 30min in + 30min out. You had to duck in some places.

Having my trusty (indestructable!) Susato D with me, I rolled out St. Anne’s Reel at a lively tempo.

Playing in that cave was truly memorable! Deep, shimmering reverb + echos! Numerous folks stopped and commented on the lovely sound!

Whistles are fun!

Personally I’ve always found my local pub to have superb acoustics - and you know the funny thing? The longer I stay and the more they insist on me whetting my own whistle, the better the acoustics sound.

Isn’t the miracle of sound a wonderful thing? Oh .. another half? I shouldn’t really - but seeing as you’ve bought it.

you downtowners can substitute an empty parking garage

A bathroom is pretty good too,
another interesting thing, is go find a corner, get as close to it as you can and play

Location: On an open motorboat on a lake

The sound was quite different, not really when I played because of the close proximity to the whistle, but when I played back what I had recorded. It sounded kind of flat.

a lot of us still have issues with corners :imp:

Not a newbie but when I WAS a newbie I took my Sausato into an indoor pool at a hotel in Virginia. While my daughter swam I played, and the acoustics were amazing. I felt like I was at Severance Hall (Cleveland’s world class symphony hall).

I actually played a concert at Severance and I was super tempted to go on stage and play the whistle there but chickened out.

I was on a houseboat trip cruising up the once mighty Murray River near Redhill in South Australia. We were passing through a section of the river which swept around in a huge arc with big red stone cliffs on either side. I was up top on the sundeck of the houseboat playing alternately between flute and whistle. It was a pretty strange acoustic effect listening to myself on a three second delay (I timed it) as the sound came sweeping back off the rock face.
I have a spot at home where I stand in the doorway between my lounge room and kitchen and play. If I position myself just right, I get a weird echo to one side and a deadened sound (because of the soft furniture in the lounge) on the other. It took a while getting used to the effect, but now I like it. I get the benefit of hearing a clean sound in one ear and the reverb effect in the other and can tell what sounds good either way without having to play the tune once through in each room. I discovered the effect when I was walking from the kitchen into the lounge while playing my whistle. Anyone else have any weird acoustic experinces?

I drop a letter grade myself. Yesterday, I was in a stairwell tuning my guitar and didn’t have a whistle on me. summa beach.

Is it possible to do this month’s assignment in December?

I don’t think I’ll ever be able to take a decent breath till then… Caught the flu two days ago.
