I’ve been whistling for about 10 years. My hands are normal size for a male, but my fingers don’t spead much, so playing a D flute was a challenge. Would one in the key of G be a good idea? Any recommendations for a good starter. I’d like to pay less than $200.
It kind of depends on what you want to do with your fluting. If you’re interested in session playing you’ll want an instrument in D. If the low D flutes are too much of a challenge (and I’d really be surprised if you couldn’t learn to play one, given some time and effort) you might try one of Jem’s piccolos (https://forums.chiffandfipple.com/t/new-updated-cp-august-2012-simple-pvc-piccolos/83165/1) .
If you’re just looking to play by yourself, most any key would do that fits your hands. Ralph Sweet/Sweetheart flutes ( http://www.sweetheartflute.com/folkfifes.html ) makes a nice wooden version in a variety of keys that fall within your price range—and they often come up on the Used Instrument Forum here. If I remember correctly, there are some there now.
I’m sure others will chime in with other suggestions, but a lot of your final decision will ride on how you plan to use the music.
Best wishes.
Steve
Thanks Steve. I don’t plan to play flute in a session. My wife plays harp and she could create an accompaniment for any key.
The Sweetheart A flute will get you also the key of D.
The Sweetheart G flute will get you also the key of C.
I have them both. They are really swell flutes.
Thanks guys.
