Here is the link to a set of tunes that I recorded. The Second tune is a tune I wrote for My friend Mike Leslie who is as wonderful flute player and is currently in Vienna. Let me know what you think
Chang I am playing a boxwood Olwel. The first tune is a tune that I lerned from the session called the Evesdropper and the second tune I wrote called the trip to Vienna.
Thanks Cathy Im glad you liked it. It is a pratten. Not real sweet but has a great bark. Its funny because I cant tell if I like the sweet R&R or the Patten bark better. They are both great sounds in themselves.
I know, it’s a tough decision. But youhave some very sweet moments with your Pratten on your recording. So hey! Maybe you’re getting kind of a best of both worlds?
Doc I was in the studio and this was one of the extra tracks laid down for fun. Only did it once so it 's not perfect but what ya gunna do. The first set of tunes I posted that were originals I used my mini disc player. It didn’t come out that bad. To lay the guitar under the flute I played the flute track through my stereo and played the guitar with it all into one mic. Talk about bootleg!!!
Joshua, it is topics such as this that are the crowning glory of forums such as this. Thank you for sharing your music with us. I always look forward to audio clips offered as a focus for feedback and appreciation.
I only wish I could join the likes of you, Hans, peeplj and other members who are able to share live samples of their music with us. I look forward to overcoming some technical and finacial difficulties so that I too can offer some audio links in the future.
As for your music, I think you play the Irish flute very well - much better than I can. I also like the percussion. Unfortunately I find the guitar, merrily plugging away like an automaton on its predictable chords a little suffocating. It is not just this music but generally I have a problem with a lot of simplistic guitar accompaniment. It is a question of taste, I admit it. It is a gut response which I am trying to explain intellectually. I reckon I would enjoy the piece more without the guitar.
I have heard much music in this genre on recordings and live. The naked flute with drum or just the bones can raise a shiver up my spine. It raises an evocation not easily defined or boxed. Put a guitar behind it and evocatory space gets stuffed up - it reduces the sensation of drifting deep into a sensation of a teddy bear’s picnic. Its amazing how powerful a guitar can be! Not just the guitar in your piece but guitar chords generally in this sort of music.
In light of this, I would appreciate it if the clip could be posted again with the guitar backing taken out.
Thanks Blayne for your comments. If I remember correctly Your are a very talented Bodhran player. I think we shared some tunes at one of the bars last year in the Catskills. That was a great time had by all!
It is a wonderful thing that we are able to share music with each other even though we are hours apart. I respect your tastes and understand your insight on what appeals to you. I tend to sit in the middle of the road with the question of guitar accompaniment. On one end I love the natural rhythm that flows from the flute generated by only the flute its self and the player. On the other hand I enjoy guitar accompaniment for the fact that it either provides more drive to the tune or other melodic compliments that might not have been noticed prior. Also the style of the accompaniment can vary. This recording has more of a John Doyle approach to backing with a hard driving rhythm and full sounding chords. But there is also very underlying accompaniment that has lots of melodic runs, finger-picking patterns and a brilliant lift like Daithi Sproule that would have fit nicely. I like both styles and I think they have a place in Irish music, Not all the time but sometimes. Maybe next time I will post one with the Daithi approach or one with just drum or even unaccompanied. It would be interesting to compare them. I did have fun recording the Guitar part though. It just felt right to me at the time and on top of that I was tired of playing my bouzooki. Thanks again for your comments.
