I have recently discovered the delights of Irish flute, and having found this great forum thought I would introduce myself.
I have had a boehm style flute for several years, I am at a low standard as I just like to mess around on it when getting back from work sometimes.
At Christmas I got a tin whistle and found the Chiff and Fipple whistle forums…which in turn lead me to finding all about the Irish flute
To get started I have purchased a polymer Tony Dixon flute ( I actually visited his workshop as he is based up the road from me!) just to see if I can handle the finger spacings as I tend to suffer from RSI in my hands, before I commit to purchasing a better flute.
I love that deep throaty sound that players manage to achieve on the bottom D!!
It was these forums that lead me to purchasing Conal O’Grada’s tutorial book, it has already taught me much.
I look forward to learning from this great community!
Well, after a year of noodling around with the tin whistle I have decided to dip a toe into the waters of the Irish flute. I wanted to play something with a lower tone, and I’ll still be in safe waters in the key of D…
I guess I’ll be a nOOB squared now

Probably one of the best tips I got for flute playing, if not the best, can be found by typing Skip Healy into the google search engine, his website should be in the list along with the words “Go home and practice”
- Please no one mention James Galway’s golden flute at this point! lol
