New wannabe flute player here.
I’ve got a Tipple three piece white pvc speckled bore coming (hopefully it will arrive tomorrow!) and am really looking forward to beginning the process of learning flute after three years of whistle. I am no great shakes as a whistle player but feel drawn to begin dabbling in the “dark side.”
I am also curious if anyone here has some experience with the new “Resonance” low D whistle/flute combo from Sweetheart. There were a few posts in the whistle area a few months ago that were quite positive about it as a whistle but I am unable to find anything regarding it’s characteristics with the flute head aside from one post by JessieK. Anybody here have any comments? A whistle/flute combo seems attractive to someone like me that would like to “swing both ways.”
I have no experience with it, but I’d put a lot of stock in JessieK’s opinion. Which I didn’t see, but I’m sure it’s on-target.
I have tried it and it is a nice Flute but it has a relativley small bore (Firth Pond type) smaller than a Rudall 5047 (M & E, McGee Medium Sized and others) so IMO I think it is a little small but if that is what you like go for it coming from a Tipple you won’t have a big problem on it. Some might prefer the smaller bore (such as Grey Larson) you should try before you buy.
I’m confused. Why is it ab problem if it’s smaller? From all I’ve heard, Grey Larson is quite capable of getting a big sound out of his Firth and Pond.
Also, why should we put stock in Jessie’s opinion? I’m just curious as to what qualifications I should know about… I guess I’m out of the loop.
Jessie has known a lot of flutes and whistles, played
for a good while, she’s smart, she’s honest and
she has good judgement. But she’s not infallible
or anything like that. Her opinion is worth taking
seriously, that’s all.
I played the Sweetheart as a low D whistle; it
seemed very good. I guess I would want to
play it as a flute before buying it as one.
I don’t think Grey gets a big sound out of his
flute; he gets a big enough sound. But
this flute is likely quieter.
