Need help with flute buying decisions

Hello,

I won some money last month and with it I bought my girlfriend a nice new goldtone banjo (because I hated her other banjo and she bought me an amazing box and blackwood bombarde from G Lehart this summer) and myself a reasonable guitar to learn on.

I have about £1000-1500 ($1,879-2,800) left over to get a keyed flute. I already have a Ormiston which I really like (it’s a new design one) and I was thinking about getting 6 keys for it which will cost about £800 ($1,500) and I have borrowed a lovely 6 key from Maurice Reviol to try out. I really like the key design on Maurice’s flute but I really like the bottom hand of the Ormiston and can’t decide what to do. I could also just sell the Ormiston and use the proceeds and all of my money to get a new 6 key from a better known maker. Arg it’s hard to decide and it’s hard to get access to all the flutes I’d like to try before I decide.

Any advice

David

Although Ormiston’s not so well known, I’ve been impressed with several of his flutes that I’ve tried in the past few years. There are three or four of them here in Montreal…one is an older one and not so good but the newer ones are very nice flutes. I would say that if you’re used to the Ormiston and you like the sound, ask him to add the keys – I believe he pin-mounts his keys so adding them to a keyless flute is feasible. Plus having a “local” maker is always good in case something goes wrong or if you want some maintenance done.

That said, if you happen see a 6-key flute by one of the “big name” makers up for sale, you might very well sell your Ormiston and use that plus the money you have left to buy that…I’m sure you wouldn’t be disappointed.

Is that the same as post mount?

yup
