naturals and sharps

How do I make naturals and sharps on a whistle? I saw it somewhere and now I can’t find the info. I think it was half-holing on a sharp to get a natural for example. Could someone clear this up for me?

What, no flats? All the poor flats on your whistle will feel lonely and rejected.

Seriously, a better way to think of it is: How do I play notes that are not in the natural diatonic scale of the whistle? Or, loosely speaking: How do I play chromatic notes on the whistle?

The fingering chart is good. But don’t be afraid to experiment with fingerings that work best on your whistle.

First of all, try to find a key that works on the whistle! D major and G major are excellent keyes on the whistle and so is, in some cases, A minor and E minor. Personally I also find that B minor works well in some tunes. But don´t try to play E major on the whistle if you can transpose that tune to D major! For G minor I always use the OXXOOO grip on my whistles. Half holing is something you must learn, but use it discerningly.

Good luck!

not much that’s better than a discerning half hole…

I am finding that half-holing is becoming easier as I use it more. Each whistle has its own particular needs so you have to work until you find what works.

I seem to remember a chap who made whistles in D with keys for the extra chromatic notes… .
