Any suggestions for pipe makers offering a narrow bore concert pitch chanter? I know Andreas Rogge makes one- any
other names of that caliber come to mind?
I believe that Derrick Gleeson has his measurements from Geoff Wooff (please correct me if I’m wrong about this!). I have a narrow D 3/4 set by Geoff and am delighted with them. I think these are more of a scaled down Harrington (since evolved) whereas I think Joe Kennedy’s might be derived from the Taylor set owned by George Balderose in Philadelphia. Might check to be sure, but I only point that out to mention that there are probably several different designs for narrow D to consider. As I mentioned I couldn’t be happier with mine.
George is actually over my way in Pittsburgh and, along with another local player, has been teaching me for a bit over a year, intermittently. He mentions that set but brings something rather more ordinary to lessons, so I haven’t heard it in action.
Hi Ken- lucky you, that set is truly lovely in aesthetic and tone. Hopefully you’ll convince George to bring it out. I think it’s the set recorded on Bill Haneman’s site here: http://billhaneman.ie/soundfiles/AnBonnanBui.mp3 but you might double check.
I have both a Wooff and Kennedy NBD. I find the Kennedy (original reed) a bit louder, a bit more nasal in the tone, and slightly more consistent in tone colour. I find the Wooff (also original reed) to have a bit more variation in tone colour available, and softer. Both excellent.
