Love this one. Haven’t heard it in a loooong time and was just reintroduced to it. All my memory (such as it is) has is this catch of the A section (rendered here in ABCs with lead-in thingy).

Name(s)? B section? Dots? MP3s? YouTube? Versions? Provenance? Juicy tidbits? I’m on a MISSION.
Nano, are those C-nats or C-sharps? It seems to start in A-something, then resolve into D-something. Pretty odd. It reminds me a bit of Contentment is Wealth, but that’s not it.
Oops. Cnats, they are. It’s a coolly modal chune in the A section in particular: from a backup standpoint, in basic terms (mine, anyway ) it starts in Am, shifts to Gmaj, back to Am, optionally shifts again to Gmaj if you like, and ends in D (majorish). Arguably the Am backups could be instead C or D if you want, but for me, doing it in Am works very well and underscores the potential obliqueness of the melody all the more. Very tasty.
The A section is odd. Moody and opaque, and I get the impression it prefers to be played slowly/deliberately. Can’t recall if the B section is mainly in A major/minor/mixollaneous or, perhaps more logically, D-something. In that instance there would be a good case for it being originally a piper’s tune.
Anyway, if nothing turns up here today, I’ve got a mini-session later on today where I should be able to catch more of it, or at least the name. I’ve got two fiddlers tussling over who got theirs from the better version. Nyuk.
Sure looks like a different-key version of Contentment is Wealth to me, though CIW doesn’t shift to the major in the B part, does it? But it’s the closest I can think of.
The other option I dredged up was a jig we used to play in a set with Sean Ryan’s Castle Jig called The Nightingale:
X: 1
T:The Nightingale
C:Sean Ryan
B:(p. 13 in “The Hidden Ireland”
D:first recorded by Paddy Canny and P.J. Hayes on their celebrated 1960 LP, as “Sean Ryan’s,”
D:also on Bobby Casey’s “Taking Flight.”
R:jig
S:from Mike Rafferty
Z:Tom Madden/Lesl Harker irtrad-l 2000-12-17
M:6/8

(Need to get this one back out, it’s a good 'ern!)
FINALLY, when I was reading your ABC’s as possibly being for a tune in D I was wondering if it was a half-remembered Diplodocus, which is in Amix and thus very shifty in terms of mood. …
Thanks, Cat, but no, it’s none of those. One of the fiddlers gave me the name two days ago but I lost it. That, at least, I can remedy today.
Oh, and have no fear as to whether I got it basically right or not: I was just on the phone with the other fiddler about it, and as these things so often happen, there we were, diddling into our phones at each other. That’s the tune, all right. He doesn’t know its name, either.
But thanks for the kickstart for The Diplodocus! I’d forgotten that one, too, and have been meaning to reacquaint myself with it.
Fixed your abc for you to find it at http://abctunesearch.com/

THAT’S IT!!! The Humours of Rahey. How do you pronounce that, anyway?
Man, thanks for the cleanup (red). Every time I think I’ve got this ABC thing licked…
Composed by fiddler James Kelly, whose father John was from Rahey in West Clare. Sounds like a piper’s tune, anyway.
I’m always bemused by how little details in memory change a tune’s version in sometimes significant and sometimes not-so-significant ways, and yet one can retain the bones of the tune intact.
After doing a Google search, Rahey looks to be maybe an alternate spelling of Rehy, from the Irish réithe, meaning “ram”. So, I’m guessing “RAY hee”. But a dictionary of mine also has it spelled reithe, so maybe “REH hee”. Hmmm.
They’re supposed to be ONES? As in 1? Howzat work? This 1 sure don’t look like this l. “Lame”…I call shenanigans.
One of the fiddlers told me about the abctunesearch.com webite just yesterday - talk about synchronicity! - and mentioned that it was built on the very same programming used for mapping and recognising genomes (!), so it’s totally fuzzy and a world superior to any other abc search engine. He’s a geek, so I have no reason to doubt him on his claims about the programming bit. His praises of it were almost worshipful.
Oh, heck. This is what I get for not reading thoroughly. So, how do I do a bar line, then? I could never find one on the keyboard…must I use a character map or code for that, then?
No no no. They’re supposed to be bar lines, which is the vertical line or “pipe” symbol. It’s ASCII 124, above the backslash key on a standard keyboard.
