my new BUSMAN whistle short reveiw

I just got my new Busman purpleheart in the mail, so here is a little reveiw about it what I have experienced so far, and some credit and thanks to some people. This whistle is special to me, because it is the first whistle I have had made for me, all my other ones are second and third hand, so you know how much i treasure this one.

When I first heard and saw of these things, I just thought these thins were too pretty to play, that they are just a collectors peice and the probably dont sound too good. Well I was soooooo wrong, these whistles play just as beautifully as they look. It is such fine craftsmanship with beautiful purple wood, and stainless steal fittings. This whistle is a gem, it is hard to find them this gorgeous. It is a very bright whistle to play jigs, reels, and horpipes. But it has a warm tone that can play aires as well. The tone is somewhat woodsy with a little chiff, great for traditionalists. It is so rich and smooth, my fingers glide up and down the holes with ease, this baby can sing! Blowing isn’t a problem either, my breath last pretty long on this whistle. Going to the second octave is very pleasent, although it takes a little more breath for the high b. I ususally never buy another whistle once i get one, but I think I will buy another one of these in the future in bloodwood D+ . I also think the tuning slide fits great.

Here is a little story of how I came upon one of these whistles. I was looking for my first high end whistle to buy that wasnt second hand. I was looking over the internet for one, and I ran across these at Whistle & Drum – Irish Tin Whistles, Flutes, Bodhráns & More. They were beautiful and I had to find out more. So then I went to http://www.busmanwhistles.com/. I was impressed, but not too sure yet to buy one. The real person who convinced me was Wanderer at http://www.tinwhistler.com/music/reviews/srcreview.asp?keyword=busman_cocobolo. That was the hook em and reel em for me. So after reading his great reveiw about them, I had to have one. So I talked to Paul a little bit and he told me he had some purpleheart tubes already finished, and that was the wood I was going to use, so I knew at that moment i was meant to have one of his peices of art. Paul I give you whistles   Paul is just as great as his whistles are, he is very nice and helpful, and that says a lot about his and his whistle’s character.

I would like to thank Paul Busman for making me such a beautiful instrument, I will cherish forever. I would like to thank Whistle and DRum for first introducing me to these whistles. I would also like to thank Mr.Mahan aka Wanderer, for helping me choose an awesome whistle for me and your great website that will probably help me in the future with collecting. Thank you guys.
Oh yea, I have excellent pictures of this whistle, but i am not too sure how to use the computer well. If anybody could tell me how to post pictures on here I would greaty appreciate it.

I share your feelings about Paul’s whistles. I recently got an Eb in pink ivory wood. It is absolutely beautiful to look at but it also plays and sounds wonderful as well. Plus Paul is a nice guy to do business with. I asked him about expanding his line with some lower and higher keys but no luck. Maybe we need to picket his house until he gives in and starts work on Bbs, As, Gs, etc.

hahahaha yeah, lets do that :smiling_imp: . i would like to see pink ivory also.

I ordered a Busman high D in blackwood. It is my favorite whistle.

Congradulations on one of the finest whistles in the business. I have three that I really treasure as music instruments, keepsakes and a personal link to a wonderful wood worker.

As fine as the Busman whistle is - I hope you continue your whistle “journey”; as you will find Paul Busman himself is even finer!

cheers to that. :pint:

I certainly have been impressed by the two I’ve had the good fortune to try… one D in blackwood, that my neighbor bought, and one delrin D+ that I got on tour … both lovely whistles. I will eventually own one, possibly in Osage Orange. Busmans are really fine whistles.

I have been experimenting on this whistle more now, and I have some more I wanted to say. The back pressure is great, and the more and more I play it, the more and more its character comes out. This whistle has personality and a very distinctive tone. The hole sizes are excellent for half holing, i used to find it hard on the cheaper whistles, but on this it just lets me play harder songs way easier that need half holing to play. I cant wait to find out more in exploring this piece. I will keep you updated. Oh yea, did I mention that it is a beautiful wine color. I take it to my wine parties and show it off to everybody, they just love the look and sound of it.

ok, i fanlly got pictures of it. here is the beauty.

I’m getting “Page Not Found” messages when trying to see your photos.

let me see if i can bring them up

there you go, i got them back up, i accidently deleted them from photobucket. sorry bout that.

Oooooooooooooooooooooooh! Pretty! But then, all Busmans are. I need a rich uncle to show up in my life! We’re paying off bills, but it sure feels like poverty at times. Must… keep… eyes… on … the… goal…

Yes, and I know where he lives! Bwhahahahahah! :smiling_imp:

good, now lets devise a plan. :smiling_imp:

Picture this:

A certain whistler who lives in Tampa Bay Florida decides to take a little trip northward to “get away from the oppressive heat and humidity”. “Gee”, he thinks - “Vermont is such a scenic place and I’m sure that it would be nice and cool in those lovely green mountains”. He checks the map. “Hmmmm - it’s only an easy 3 day drive from here”. He carefully packs what he needs and heads north. A few days later, our exhausted traveler enters Vermont. Stopping at a Walmart in Bennington, our hero just happens to run into a certain fellow fippler that he met on a certain message board some months previous. In the conversation that follows, certain topics are discussed and plans made. . .

. . . Paul Busman is awakened one night by a loud screeching noise and the sound of shattering glass. In his living room, he discovers a large brick. On the brick is money to compensate for the window and a note which says simply:

MAKE BIGGER WHISTLES!

“My, it certainly is lovely here” our traveling whistler remarks to his friend . . .

Ha ha! In our living room, I’d be lucky to FIND the brick!

 that is a great plan, you are the brains of the mission.

That makes you the muscle . . .

Paul, I’ll make sure that TWC throws the brick gently, so it lands in a clear spot . . . hypothetically speaking, of course . . .
