My latest little whistle- BS Dulcet whistle in G

Hi all,
here is a photo of my latest eBay antique whistle, it is to match the Bb Dulcet that I have. The whistle is a little thing, only 8"…
I think there would be ear damage if I play the second octave indoors!
Maybe I will be able to find the whole set, a D would be nice, anyone have a Dulcet in D?

This is my high G Dulcet:

Mine is older than yours, as it doesn’t have the “& Son” bit after Barnett Samuel on the label. Perhaps 1861-1869. But obviously, yours has been somewhat better cared for

Yours has more character! We should start a club… I also have a wooden flute by the same maker.
I may replace the lead with lead free pewter at some point. The Bb Dulcet lives up to it’s name, I haven’t got the G playing well yet.

Mine took some effort to get working, but in the end proved to be quite sweet, and nowhere near as loud as my Generation G.

Eskin has a 1900 high-G Wallis, almost identical to your newest Dulcet. He and I once played a duet on ours at a session.

But I only play it on very rare occasions, what with the lead block and the fragile condition of mine.

I’ve never seen one in D. That would be a find.

Howdy,

You’re a far braver man than I - I would never put lead near my mouth.

Best,

Dave

I would agree that nobody should put anything made of bare lead in their mouth.

I remember hearing long ago that the British government made the maker of Generation whistles stop using lead in their fipples, which was why they started using the injection-molded plastic heads some time after WWII. I used to have one of the early Generations, too.

On all of my antique whistles, I have covered the lead block with clear fingernail polish, and I don’t bite. I’ve probably played all of them put together for a grand total of three minutes, and that was years ago.

As you may recall, there have been knock-down, drag-out flame wars on this forum about this very issue. Let’s not go there, OK?
